The Best Commercial Joint Rolling Machine

How To Choose Your Best
Commercial Joint Rolling Machine.

All the manufacturers say their commercial joint rolling machine is the fastest, is the most accurate, is the most durable…They all look shiny. Most have cool tech.

You have to be careful. The industry is littered with deceptions: about speed, accuracy, support, what strains work in which machines…

It’s easy to buy a mistake. It’s easy to big a really big paperweight. Buy the wrong machine and you could bankrupt the company.

It’s challenging to find your best commercial joint rolling machine that’s right for you: your current monthly production, your goals, your labor force, your budget, your strain or strains, your cones, even your building and weather.

What’s good for the goose is not necessarily good for the gander.

So, here’s 4 things to consider before you invest in a commercial joint rolling machine that is right for your business.

1. Money

We might as well talk about the elephant in the room. Machines are expensive, but, at a certain production level, hand automation is more expensive than automation.

It’s just a question of when you reach that level. So, it’s not a question of if you automate; the only question is when, and when we talk to our current customers, the common answer is that companies, looking back, wished they had automated earlier.

They waited too long. Automation was easier and more profitable than they expected. So, sooner is better than later.

There are 3 types of pre roll machines: expensive, medium, and cheap.

Expensive is in the range 0f $400,000 to $750,000. These are, for the most part, all in one solutions: weigh, fill, trim. The positive is that the all in one solution is, well, all in one. One machine does it all.

One downside is that if part of the machine goes down, the whole machine goes done. Plus,  all in one solutions, being more complicated, break down more. There’s more moving parts and those parts link up with other parts… and you have almost infinite possibilities of things going sideways. Sometimes, simple is better.

The biggest downside is cost. If you have the volume to make a $750,000 investment make sense, it could be a great option. All in one solutions can save an enormous amount of labor.

Headaches will go down and profits will go up. You’ll reach cannabis nirvana. Soon, you’ll be the toast of the cannabis industry, on the cover of MG, and naming your buyout price. That’s the theory.

The other side of the price continuum is cheap: $30,000 and less. There’s the Tesla and there’s the Pinto.

Efficiency wise, it’s better than hand rolling, but not by much. Of course, 25K is a lot easier to come up with than 750K, so these commercial joint rolling machines are where a lot of companies start. Baby steps first and then learn to walk and then run. Depending on your current volume and your goals, It might make sense.

Aside from being limited in speed and accuracy (cheaper models use volumetric filling, less accurate than using weigh scales), the other problem with cheap models is technical support. Usually, there isn’t any.

Or, the manufacturer says there’s support but the reality is that there’s no support, or it takes so long to get support that it’s faster to just fix it yourself. So, you’re on your own automation island, and there’s no rescue ship coming.

Whether you’re buying a Tesla or a Pinto, or the next option, it’s important – critical really – to have an accurate cost picture of your manual/current labor.

How much – including sick time, down time, all the xtra taxes… – does it cost? Quantify everything. Know your monthly cost of production for x number of pre rolls. You can’t ballpark it. Making your right decisions requires accurate numbers.

The other side of the equation is your goals. Saving money is great but your commercial joint rolling machine is the engine that gets you where you want to go.

Realistically, how many pre rolls per month will your commercial joint filling machine make? You have to take a manufacturers projections with a grain of salt.

The best way to insure manufacturers speed and accuracy projections is an F.A.T. (Factory Authorization Test). You run your strain with your cones in their machine.

Now, a lot of companies don’t offer this test, for obvious reasons. It blows a hole in their projections. Their house of cards crumbles.

We’re unique in that we require a F.A.T. Before your commercial joint rolling machine leaves our warehouse, you will see, either in person or via video, your product run with your cones on our machine.

With the more expensive, complex machines, there’s one cost that 98% of companies don’t consider: the additional labor cost of hiring high end, qualified engineers to run the machine, and the additional cost of ongoing training and education. This is not an issue with the cheap and medium commercial joint rolling machines.

The third type of commercial joint rolling machine, the medium priced, the Ford 150, is $100,000 to $200,000. For a lot of companies, this is the investment sweet spot, the Goldilocks price, not too expensive and not too cheap. It’s the commercial joint rolling machine that best fits their needs.

Depending on your volume ROI can be reached in 3-6 months, usually within a year. This makes getting into automation faster than buying a Tesla but gives you way more return than a Pinto. It’s just right.

For example, our Rollmaster420 runs approximately 1200 pre rolls per hour at .001 resolution, definitely fast enough and accurate enough to scale your company.

We’re biased, but we think efficiency – matters. It’s why you buy your commercial joint rolling machine. It’s not what the Jones buy. It’s what’s right for you.

2. Speed & Accuracy

Here’s where the deceptions start.

Everyone wants to sell you the promised land, milk and honey, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

“Just press the button,” says the sales rep in his tasseled loafers, “sit back, enjoy your Kenya cold brew, and this machine will crank out 4000 Instagram worthy pre rolls per hour. Then, you just collect the Benjamins.”

Yes, there are commercial joint rolling machines that will produce thousands of joints per hour, even way more than your college roommate. But, this is a tortoise and the hare tale.

How long does it stay up and running? How well does it handle different strains? How long does it take to clean the machine? Plus, if one part goes down, the whole machine goes down?

Here’s another part of the equation that buyers don’t consider.

Let’s be honest.

The cannabis industry has high turnover. Here today, gone toganja.

What is the cost of training and constantly retraining well qualified, engineeresque operators to run those commercial joint rolling machines? NASA doesn’t have this problem. The cannabis industry does.

Add it all up and the tortoise – machine that can run 1200 an hour but stay up and running and are easy to run – wins again.

Yes, we’re biased, but there’s a reason we designed and build our cone rolling machine the way that we do.

Automation is a marathon, not a sprint.

3. Is The Commercial Joint Rolling Machine Modular?

In other words, will it grow with you?

The machines at the top end are not designed to grow. They are all in one units. Those at the bottom are not really designed to grow either. You can’t add on; you just buy another one.

A modular commercial joint rolling machine will grow with you. As you scale, the machine scales.

Plus, modular machines have a smaller footprint – being modular, their parts can be separated – and will fit into rooms with a normal size door. You don’t need 12 or 16 foot ceilings and roll up doors. Many of our customers work out of a room that is the size of a small bedroom.

So, if flexibility and the option to scale is important to your growth, a modular system is the way to go.

4. Easy to Run Different Strains and Easy to Clean

Here’s the thing.

The big, expensive commercial joint rolling machine is like a really big ship or train. It can work great if you’re just going straight. If you just run one strain and you have enough production to justify the cost, one of those machines might be your best fit.

However, if you need to navigate changing waters, a smaller boat will serve you better.

The big, complicated commercial joint rolling machine doesn’t do change well. It’s hard, if not impossible, to get it to work with different strains, especially infused strains. It’s hard to change the parts. It’s hard to clean. It can take several hours. That’s downtime.

So, if you want to stay nimble, run different strains and easily get your commercial joint rolling machine cleaned and ready for the next strain, it’s best to go with the cheap or moderately expensive machine.

You’ll stay up and running.

5. Support

The hard truth is that your machine will go down. Whether it’s expensive, medium priced or cheap, whether because of operator error, accident, machine malfunction… something will go off course. The question is not if, it’s when.

So, the bigger question is  how quickly will your
commercial joint rolling machine be up and running, and how much will it cost?

Most of the manufacturers have a similar warranty for the first 6 months to a year. If something goes wrong, typically, parts and labor are covered and you should be up and running.

Now, there is a difference in how quickly manufacturers respond to your distress call. It could take months or you could reach someone on
first call and be back up and running within a few minutes. Be careful. There’s that much of a difference.

The other big difference is what happens after the warranty and guarantee expire. For most manufacturers, it’s about $200 an hour – some more, some less – to fix something, and it might take weeks, if not months to get it fixed.

That we know of, we’re the only packaging manufacturer to provide free lifetime support. If you have a problem, call or email. We’ll respond via phone or FaceTime and get you back up and running for free. This fixes most problems.

So, you end up, over the life of the commercial joint rolling machine, saving, on average, tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on support. Phone call and FaceTime support are free for the life of your commercial joint rolling machine.

So, there you go. Those are the 4 guidelines for finding your right commercial joint filing machine: price, modular vs all-in-one, change/clean, and support.

6. Who Is Your Best Guide?

Think of it this way. You’re Luke. You’re Leia. You’re looking for your Obi-Wan.

You’re not buying a commercial joint rolling machine. You’re hiring a long term guide to help you fight the evils of hand production and build your own empire of truth and justice and the cannabis way, something like that.

In purchasing a commercial joint rolling machine, you should be hiring a manufacturer that has your best interests at heart, that understands your challenges and provides a long term plan. If you succeed, they succeed.

Here’s the bottom line. Hire a partner more than you buy a machine.

So, there you go. Those are the 6 guidelines for finding your right commercial joint filing machine: price, speed and accuracy, modular vs all-in-one, change/clean, support, your best guide

2. Built To Your Order

Here’s another difference: most companies will sell you an “off the shelf” machine.

It’s like ordering from Amazon. Order comes in; product goes out.

Yes, it’s faster, but it’s slower in the long run. It’s not made for your strain and cones, for your facility, for your employees, even for your climate…it all matters.

Packaging equipment that is built for your variables save you time, money, and headaches.

3. Written Performance Guarantee

If we say that your machine will run at X with Y accuracy, it will run at X with Y accuracy.

It’s in writing. Not only that, you get to see it run at X and Y – either in person or via video – before you make the final payment and it ships.

No one else does that. No one.

4. Free Lifetime Support

Here’s the kicker: Free Lifetime Support.

Parts are guaranteed for 6 months, and you have free lifetime phone and video support.

The Shaker Table

This is the second, and integral, part of the Rollmaster420. It’s the Shaker Table, also called The Compaction Table.

You can’t just fill and weigh accurately. You need to fill, weigh, and compact evenly. One doesn’t work without the other. It’s what the market demands.

Other manufacturers try to only tap from above. It doesn’t work. The bottom is not packed evenly. What’s required is compaction from the bottom – The Shaker Table.

The Twistmaster420

Coming in Q3 2022, The Twistmaster420 automates the second bottleneck of cone weighing and filling, the twisting.

Twisting 240 cones in approximately 12 minutes, The Twistmaster420, like it’s big brother TheRollmaster420, will revolutionise pre roll automation.
